The »Association of State Archaeologists in the Federal Republic of Germany« was founded in 1949. The association combines the activities of the archaeological heritage offices in the federal states (Bundesländer), offering a platform to share information and to address issues of common interest.

After German reunification in 1989 the State Archaeologists of the five new federal states joined the association.

The new statutes provide for a total of 60 members with representatives from all 16 states of the Federal Republic. Members include the directors of the archaeological state offices, of independent departments and further delegates.

The annual conferences are organised by one of the state archaeologists in turn. They comprise a member meeting, a workshop and a colloquium with experts addressing organisational and legal issues as well as themes from archaeological field work.

The association helps to coordinate activities and to facilitate discussions, for instance when dealing with the »Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder of the Federal Republic«.
